Bohs have played all of their eight new signings in the pre-season games, which included competitive matches in the Leinster Senior Cup (v Bluebell United) and Setanta Sports Cup (v Coleraine). “We’re looking forward to the start of the season,” Bohs manager Pat Fenlon said. “It’s been a long pre-season but the Coleraine game helped us. Fingal have a good squad and in fairness to them they always have a go at teams.”

Bohemians will be without defender Ken Oman who is definitely out with a knee injury, while Jason Byrne is doubtful for the opening match. He came off before half-time in last Saturday’s match against Coleraine. Paddy Madden, who has been impressive in pre-season matches, scoring regularly, looks a likely starter on the day after his 20th birthday (4th March 2010).

Sporting Fingal won promotion last season after defeating Bray Wanderers in a play-off. In Liam Buckley, they have an experienced manager, who has managed to strengthen an already impressive team. Shane Barrett, Ger O’Brien, Kenny Browne and ex-Bohs star Glen Crowe are among those who have joined for this season.

Bohemians’ line-ups in their last three matches have been:

v Shelbourne (friendly, 19th February, 2-0): Chris O’Connor, Owen Heary (Jason McGuinness, 60), Brian Shelley, Steven Gray, Mark Rossiter, Mark Quigley, Glenn Cronin, Paul Keegan (Ryan McEvoy, 70), Killian Brennan (Anto Murphy, 60), Raffaele Cretaro (Jason Byrne, half-time), Paddy Madden

v Bluebell United (Leinster Senior Cup, 23rd February, 1-0): Barry Murphy, Owen Heary, Conor Powell, Jason McGuinness, Steven Gray, Mark Quigley (Anto Murphy, 75), Glenn Cronin, Paul Keegan (Ruaidhri Higgins), Killian Brennan, Jason Byrne, Paddy Madden (Aaron Greene, 65)

v Coleraine (Setanta Sports Cup, 27th February, 3-1) : Barry Murphy, Owen Heary, Conor Powell, Brian Shelley, Jason McGuinness, Anto Murphy, Glenn Cronin, Mark Rossiter, Killian Brennan (Aaron Greene 74), Mark Quigley (Gary Burke 84), Jason Byrne (Paddy Madden 34)

Brazil produced a breath-taking second-half performance as they ran-out 2-0 winners over the Republic of Ireland in their friendly international at the Emirates Stadium. Giovanni Trapttoni’s side upstaged their more illustrious opponents for the majority of the opening half, with Robbie Keane, Damien Duff and Kevin Doyle all forcing good saves from Julio Cesar. But the South American giants took the lead just before the break when Robinho was adjudged to be on-side and his low cross was deflected past Shay Given by Keith Andrews. Ireland were second-best for the rest of the game, with Kaka, Dani Alves and Robinho running their opponents ragged. They created a number of goal-scoring chances, but only manged to convert one of them as Robinho bagged the man-of-the-match award when he applied the finish to a scintillating attacking move. The only silver-lining for Giovanni Trapattoni was the international debut for James McCarthy, who came off the bench in the second-half to win his first cap. After the game Glen Whelan and Kevin Doyle gave their opinions on the match.

The Carling cup may not have the prestige of the Premier League, champions league or even FA cup but its a chance for Both Manchester United and Aston VIlla players to stake a claim in the history books.

Through all their success Manchester United have never managed to defend a cup title while for villa its a chance at their first piece of glory since 1996. Martin O’Neil wants the trip down Wembely way to become a familiar one.

Cup finals though are a much more familiar scenario for United and Alex Fergeson has paid tribute to the work O’Neil has done to get villa to the final.

Team news and sir Alex has a few dilemma’s, he will have to do without new England captain Rio Ferdinand who has a back injury while Nani is suspended

On the other hand Villa have almost a full squad to choose from captain Stillion Petrov is in contention after recovering from a slight illness. Brad Freidl, James collins and Emiel Heskey are back after being rested against crystal Palace in mid week. the action begins at 3.
