Becks Makes No Impact As United Hammer Milan 4-0 At Theatre Of Dreams

Manchester United  4 – 0  AC Milan

  • Rooney(13,46),
  • Ji-Sung Park (59)
  • Fletcher (87)

Wayne Rooney reached 30 for the season as Manchester United booked their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a thumping 4-0 victory over AC Milan. Before the game David Beckham who was returning to Old Trafford for the first time since leaving the red devils in 2003 for Real Madrid, received a hero’s welcome when his name was called out over the PA system, and also when he came on late in the second half.

Rooney headed home Gary Neville’s excellent cross from the right in the 13th minute to hand his side an early advantage and left Milan needing to score three times. Milan had missed two good chances in the opening 10 minutes with Ronaldinho flashing a header narrowly wide before Klaas Jan Huntelaar failed to control Thiago Silva’s great ball over the defence.

Red-hot Roo put the result beyond doubt in the very first minute of the second half, applying a deft finish to Nani’s superb pass from the left after Milan had gifted the ball to the flying winger. Park Ji-Sung added a third in the 59th minute from Paul Scholes’ deft ball, firing across Christian Abbiati, with Darren Fletcher’s late header from Rafael’s cross completing a resounding 7-2 aggregate success. David Beckham’s much-vaunted return to Old Trafford was rendered little more than a sideshow as he remained on the bench until the 64th minute, although one blistering volley from outside the area stung Edwin van der Sar’s palms.

Missing Five Grand 147 Pot Fails To Kill Kenny

Former champion Ken Doherty thrashed Joe Swail 10-1 in the final qualifying round to book his place at next month’s World Championships at the Crucible.
The Dubliner, 40, who failed to qualify last year, romped into an 8-1 first-session lead before wrapping up victory without fuss after the resumption.
“I was in tears almost last year when I lost,” said the 1997 champion.”I always thought it was a premature end, it couldn’t be like that and I had a lot more to offer,” he added.Doherty is the only non-British player other than Cliff Thorburn to win the world title but lost in last year’s qualifiers to end a 15-year run at the championships.”I didn’t know where my game was going and it was a real down time for me,” said Doherty, who had slipped to 44 in the world rankings but now looks sure to get back among the top 32.Doherty had the chance of a 147 break in the 10th frame against Northern Irishman Swail but a kick on the 11th red left him awkward on the black, which he overcut as the break ended on 81.A maximum would have been worth £5,000 in prize money, however Doherty, who had ousted the iconic Jimmy White in the second qualifying round, was more than happy with a place in Thursday’s draw for the televised stages.
A day after 52-year-old six-time champion Steve Davis earned his 30th appearance in the first round with a 10-4 win over Adrian Gunnell, Doherty paid tribute to both ‘The Nugget’ and ‘The Whirlwind’.
“You look at Steve Davis and the way he played yesterday and he’s five or six years older than Jimmy White and John Parrott. You could take a lot of leaves out of Steve Davis’s book.I take a lot of inspiration from the likes of Steve and Jimmy. They’re great characters, they’ve been great players and ambassadors and have a great determination and grit – and that was obvious the way Steve qualified and how Jimmy keeps coming back for more.”
Parrott, 45, indicated he will quit the sport after his qualifying loss to Chinese teenager Anda Zhang. However, Doherty urged the 1991 world champion to have a rethink.”John Parrott is a true champion and I hope he reconsiders retirement because I think he still has a lot to offer the game. Jimmy is the same as well. He says he’s going to give it one more year but I think there’s plenty of life,” Doherty said.

Rod Puts Rafa’s Reds In Their Place

Full Time Score Wigan(Rodellaga 35)  1- 0 Liverpool

Liverpool suffered a humiliating setback in their attempts to claim a spot in next seasons Champions League when they succumbed to defeat at relegation-threatened Wigan. No margin for error, their manager, Rafael Benítez, had warned before kick off. But this Liverpool team is full of errors. They would have reclaimed fourth place with a victory. Instead, their seventh away defeat of this Premier League campaign has left them sixth, one point behind Tottenham Hotspur in the final Champions League zone but having played one game more than Spurs, two more than Manchester City and three more than Aston Villa. Five bookings indicated their frustration.

Wigan’s slide towards relegation had appeared inevitable, with one win in 13 league games– against Wolves in January – explaining their position one point above the bottom three. There was a noticeable aversion to risk in Roberto Martinez’s team in the early stages, although given that their malaise has far deeper roots than the pitch here, that came as no surprise.

One glimpse of the quagmire that welcomed Spurs 16 days ago confirmed that the surface had to be re-laid but it was disconcerting to see the staff at work before this game had kicked off. The uneven turf needed treatment after the warm-up, with the distribution from all players paying an inevitable price once the match began.

Liverpool were first to settle and they looked well equipped to increase Wigan’s insecurities. Javier Mascherano, again preferred at right-back, with Glen Johnson returning to the bench after a three-month absence, caused problems with a low cross that fell to Steven Gerrard on the edge of the area – the shot was sliced over. Shortly after that Fernando Torres struck the outside of Chris Kirkland’s post from close range, after Maxi Rodríguez’s header had found the Spaniard unmarked from a Gerrard corner. First impressions were to prove thoroughly deceptive, however.

Wigan’s holding midfield duo, Mohamed Diame and James McCarthy, gradually took control in their individual battles, displaying an accuracy in the challenge and on the ball that Liverpool’s midfielders failed to match. Gerrard in particular had an ordeal.

While Diame and McCarthy provided the foundation for the home side’s improvement, their penetration came from Charles N’Zogbia, once he discovered he had the beating of Emiliano Insua on the right. The Argentinian left-back was the first of three Liverpool players to be booked in the opening 33 minutes for a foul on N’Zogbia. The supply line from N’Zogbia flowed, with the lone striker, Marcelo Moreno, close to scoring in front of an open goal after the winger had spun Insua inside the box and crossed hard and low from the right.

Hugo Rodallega wasted an inviting free-kick from 20 yards and though Dirk Kuyt combined with Yossi Benayoun to produce a decent opening for Gerrard, which Paul Scharner stifled with an excellent block tackle, the Latics continued to present the greater threat.

Their goal, however, owed much to Liverpool’s carelessness. Kuyt collected a throw-in deep inside his own half and for some reason that could not be blamed on the pitch, sent a dreadful pass straight to Emmerson Boyce. Wigan’s right-back suddenly transformed himself into Rivelinho, spraying a delightful cross with the outside of the foot over the visiting defence, and the unmarked Rodellega volleyed his first goal since Boxing Day – and Wigan’s first in 382 minutes of football – wide of the exposed José Reina.

The Colombian striker was presented with a clear opportunity to double Wigan’s advantage 42 seconds after the restart when McCarthy broke through a vast expanse of space down Liverpool’s left, not for the first time, and picked out Rodallega free on the far side. Wigan’s leading goalscorer took too long to consider his options and enabled Mascherano to block the shot when it came.

Torres squandered a decent chance of his own from a Rodríguez cut-back on the right and went agonisingly close with a late volley from Kuyt’s knockdown. Despite showing the urgency the situation demanded in the second half, Liverpool were constantly vulnerable at the back. A ludicrous comedy of errors almost gifted Wigan a second when Jamie Carragher headed a long ball over his own goalkeeper and cannoned his clearance against the industrious Moreno. The ball loo ed towards goal, where Sotirios Kyrgiakos spared his partner’s embarrassment with a vital headed clearance off the line.

IRFU Set Out Aviva Plan

Tagged Under : , ,

To mark the opening of the Aviva Stadium, the Irish Rugby Football Union today confirmed that the first game to be played in 2010 will be an historic rugby match between two composite provincial teams pitting a Leinster/Ulster team against a Munster/Connacht selection on Saturday, 7 August.

Leinster and Ulster were the first representative teams to play in the old Lansdowne Road nearly 133 years ago on 16 December 1876. Both provinces were also on hand to play the final game, “The Last Stand” in the stadium on New Years Eve 2006, when Leinster beat Ulster 20-12 in the Magners League.

While they were rivals on both of these occasions, they will be joining forces as a Leinster/Ulster selection will play a Munster/Connacht team for the first ever game in the Aviva Stadium. The game will form part of the provincial preseason calendar and present Irish rugby stakeholders with the opportunity to be the first to witness rugby returning home to the iconic Aviva Stadium.

The Aviva Stadium will play host to some of the top teams in world rugby during the Guinness Series in November next year. Ireland is scheduled to play four internationals for the first time during that period against World Champions South Africa, followed by games against Samoa, New Zealand and Argentina.

Commenting on the announcement, IRFU Chief Executive Philip Browne said, “Coming on the back of the announcement that World Champions South Africa will be the first international opposition to play here, this promises to be a great occasion to open the Aviva Stadium to the Irish Rugby public. It was felt that a combined provinces fixture would be the most appropriate way to do this providing a look back into the history of the game while also creating a new chapter for Irish Rugby.”

Pompy Must Apply For FA Cup Money

Tagged Under : , ,

Sportspeak understands Portsmouth will have to make a special representation to the Football Association in order to be paid their FA Cup money, Pompey have earned £607,500 in winnings and broadcast fees after beating Birmingham to reach the semi-finals.

Any club in administration, as Portsmouth are, have to seek approval from the FA to keep Cup winnings. Their case will now be reviewed by the FA, to see if the club has met all its obligations to competitive clubs. Pompey will need to write to the FA and make a representation to the Professional Game Board, who will assess the case on the basis of any obligations Portsmouth have to fulfil.

The FA Cup is one of the few areas of success for Portsmouth this season and the crisis club face either Tottenham or Fulham in the semi-finals. Pompey are currently fighting a battle in the High Court over their right to go into voluntary administration.

The team appointed Andrew Andronikou as their administrator on 26 February to see if he could salvage the club’s finances by cutting costs. The move came ahead of an expected winding up order from Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs.

HMRC have since challenged the move into voluntary administration and questioned the validity of Andronikou’s appointment.  It was claimed that Andronikou may have links with Portsmouth owner Balram Chainrai, compromising his independence. The case is due to reconvene on 15 March after it was adjourned on 2 March.

As a result of going into administration, the club also face a nine-point penalty from the Premier League that will almost certainly see Pompey relegated to the Championship.

Fabregas WILL Miss Porto Clash

Tagged Under : , , ,

Arsenal have recieved a real blow this week announcing that captain Cesc Fabregas will miss tomorrow’s Champions League tie against Porto because of a hamstring injury he picked up against Burnley at the weekend.

The midfielder scored the opener in the 3-1 victory against the Clarets but was forced off in the 39th minute. He missed today’s training and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger revealed: “We cannot take a gamble, so he is not available.” Arsenal need to turn around a 2-1 deficit when they host Porto in the second leg of their last-16 tie.

Fabregas,  was sidelined for three weeks after aggravating the same hamstring in December against Aston Villa – a game in which he produced a 27-minute cameo appearance as a substitute and scored twice before limping off.
If the Spanish international is sidelined for a lengthy period it could seriously damage Arsenal’s hopes of winning the Premier League title, with the Gunners two points behind leaders Manchester United and level on points with Chelsea, who have a game in hand on their rivals.

Abou Diaby replaced Fabregas on Saturday and could stand in again tomorrow. More positive news for Arsenal is that veteran defender Sol Campbell did train today and looks likely to be fit to face the Portuguese side following a groin problem. The former England international is in line to play because William Gallas has been ruled out because of a calf injury.

The Gunners also have goalkeeper Manuel Almunia back after the Spaniard missed the away leg in Portugal. His replacement that night, Lukasz Fabianski, was at fault for Porto’s opening goal and also picked up Campbell’s pass for the free-kick that led to the home side’s second-half winner. Porto have lost their last six matches in London and suffered their heaviest Champions League defeat early last season at the hands of Arsenal at the Emirates, going down 4-0.

Italians Get Into Magners League

Tagged Under : , ,

The Magners League is to be expanded from ten to 12 teams from the start of next season as two Italian clubs are set to join the Celtic competition.

The Celtic Rugby Board board have given Treviso and a renamed Viadana a four-year licence into the revamped League. The move is the biggest boost for Italian rugby since the national team’s entry into the Six Nations in 2000. The two Scottish, four Welsh and four Irish clubs have received financial guarantees from the Celtic board.

The current teams – including reigning champions Munster – feared they may lose out financially with the admission of the Italians. So after a year-long viability review, league chiefs reassured the current members about the financial and commercial conditions – after a due diligence process by the sports consultancy arm of Deloittes.

There were fears that Scottish teams Edinburgh and Glasgow’s participation in the Magners League was in jeopardy after a supposed disagreement with their Welsh and Irish counterparts over a proposal to include the Italian teams. But the three Celtic Unions unanimously agreed to the introduction of two new Italian super sides after further reassurances of the competitive strength of the two Italian sides and the standard of their facilities.

The Italians joining the Magners League, which has been in discussions for the best part of 18 months, is expected to be widely well-received in rugby as it should significantly improve Italian rugby standards. Benetton Treviso and the new Aironi rugby region – based at Viadana’s Stadio Luigi Zaffanella – which will involve various clubs from the Lombardia and Emilia-Romagna regions will enter the Magners League in its 10th season.

Celtic Rugby director David Jordan said: “This is another massive step forward for the Magners League and follows the decision to go to a top four play-off system to determine our champion team. “As well as providing more fixtures for the teams already involved, this will also bring both a major cash injection into the competition and greater exposure across Europe. “The implementation of the play-offs and the Magners League Grand Final this season has already seen a marked improvement in the competitiveness of the League and the arrival of two Italian teams will provide another boost to the competition.

Giancarlo Dondi, President of Federazione Italiana Rugby (FIR), said: “I am sure that the Magners League will bring benefits to all Italian rugby and will have a positive impact on the competitiveness of our national team.”

Fergie Sets Sights On Cole

Tagged Under : , , ,

Sportspeak understands Manchester United seem to have their sights set on a Michael Owen-style move in the summer for Chelsea’s Joe Cole.

Red’s boss Sir Alex Ferguson will try to land Cole on a free transfer if the midfielder fails to agree a new contract at Stamford Bridge. Fergie has always wanted Cole, 28, and could now have his best opportunity to clinch a deal. The Scot snapped up Michael Owen on a free transfer from Newcastle last summer and is now eyeing a similar swoop.

Former West Ham starlet Cole, struggling to make England’s World Cup squad after a cruciate knee-ligament injury, is fit again but has failed to re-establish himself at Chelsea under manager Carlo Ancelotti. And contract talks have stalled, with Chelsea said to be unwilling to increase the midfielder’s wages from £80,000-a-week to in excess of £100,000. Cole, hoping to face Stoke today in the FA Cup, appeals to Fergie because of his ability, attitude and versatility, which includes playing on both flanks.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, Cole’s manager at West Ham, would happily be reunited with the England international, but wages would be a problem.  And there could also be interest from Liverpool and Manchester City, but Fergie would be favourite to win the battle if Cole and Chelsea can’t reach an agreement.

Meanwhile, Michael Owen- Cole’s former England team-mate – undergoes surgery on his hamstring tomorrow and will be out for the rest of the season.

O’Gara To Lead Munster Against Newport

Tagged Under : ,

Ronan O’Gara will captain Munster in the Magners League clash with The Dragons in Rodney Parade tomorrow.

O’Gara himself is the one personnel change in the backline from the one that started against Edinburgh two weeks ago, Ian Dowling, who played against the Scots, ruled out with an ankle injury. In the pack, the front row is unchanged while Billy Holland partners Mick O’Driscoll in the second row and Tommy O’Donnell takes over form the injured Niall Ronan in the back row.

O’Donnell is set to win his 10th Munster senior cap while across from him in that back-row will be another Clanwilliam man Alan Quinlan who in winning his 189th cap is closing in on the record held by Anthony Foley (201).

“I’d have to say it’s not something I’ve been giving any thought to really, more concentrating on the job in hand, ” Quinlan said. “This is a big game for us. This is a very tight League, very competitive and our ambition is to be involved in the play offs.

“Our away form hasn’t been good and that’s something we’re very aware of and looking to correct. But saying that Rodney Parade is never an easy place to go to get a result. Dragons have improved immensely from when we played them, they’ve beaten Leinster here and last time out they drew in Ravenhill. That makes them a very good side.

“I’ve no doubt they’ll be up for this one big-time so we can expect nothing less than a game of huge intensity that will go right down to the wire.”

Once again Tony McGahan makes use of his young bloods with highly regarded Academy pair Ian Nagle and Scott Deasy on the bench alongside Duncan Williams and Ciaran O’Boyle who scored a superb try in this fixture last season.

Munster: P Warwick; D Howlett, L Mafi, J de Villiers, D Hurley; R O’Gara capt, P Stringer; M Horan, D Fogarty, T Buckley; M O’Driscoll, B Holland; A Quinlan, T O’Donnell, J Coughlan. Replacements: D Varley, J Brugnaut, I Nagle, N Williams, D Williams, S Deasy, C O’Boyle.
