Saints Shock Gypsies Late On To Remain Top

St Patricks Athletic have caused a massive upset in Dalymount Park grabbing a late goal to sink Bohemians and remain top of the Airtricity League table.
The atmosphere in Dalymount Park this evening seemed a little muted at the start of the game, possibly fans here very nervous about the future of their club after whats been written about them since their shocking exit from the champions league qualifiers. The 300 St Pats fans were determined to remind Bohs about their short lived European adventure by bringing banners reading 'Embarrassment' and TNS – The Next Shells.
St Pats who came into this evenings monster tie leading the table only on goal difference and right from the whistle had the chance to get on the score sheet. Paul Keegan took down Damien Lynch around 50 yards from the goal, the free though was right into the arms of keeper Barry Murphy although Murphy did fumble it in the process of taking it.
In what must have been the quickest goal of the season came for Bohs in the opening minutes. It came from some wonderful football and passing work, Killian Brennan took the ball on the halfway line and released it to Gareth McGlynn, from there McGlynn put Glen Cronin through and he sent it across to Brennan on the right hand side, he put in a beauty cross for captain Owen Heary, who put in a lovely header past Rogers to go 1 up and the Bohs fans were happy to let St Pats fans know that they had indeed forgotten about TNS and were ready to move on, great start from the champions.
The early goal settled any nerves the gypsies had and they were happy enough just to pass around the field and keep the ball away from Pats, which they did quite well. Pats really needed a spark but they couldnt work up much to find that spark, but they did try to throw everything but the kitchen sink at the Champions, good chances from Damien Lynch and Ryan Guy more notably, but to their credit the Bohs defense looked to have everything under control but this was only half an hour in so it most definitely was not time to write Pats off.
With a good 5 minutes to go till half time Bohs really should have been 2 up, Paddy Madden tried to shoot but he was dispossessed by Stuart Byrne but he slipped in the Box and Mark Quigley riffled a shot only inches wide very unlucky for him, Pat Fenlon though could not fault the effort his players put in and would have been very happy to go into half time with the lead, Pete Mahon on the other hand will have had some half time talk. 1-0 at half time.
The first 15 minutes of the second half was certainly won by Bohs in terms of ball kept in the Pats half they had a handfull of chances more notably from the on form Paddy Madden who scored 2 goals in last weeks 3-0 win over Bray and Also Mark Quigley trying to silence the Pats fans once and for all following an incident in Richmond Park at the start of the season.
Bohs certainly had all the chances in the second half and Fenlons men will have been disappointed only to hold onto a 1 goal lead, especially because with 3 points top spot would have been theirs but secondly because you cant ever write Pats out of a game. With about 10 minutes remaining Bohs really needed a second goal, they were living dangerously and giving the visitors far too many chances to shoot, once again it was Damien Lynch with all the threatening chances.
On 78 minutes Pat Fenlon realized Mark Quigley wasnt going to get the second goal if it was to come and introduced Jason Byrne following "We want Jason Byrne" chants from the packed Bohs crowd in Dalyer. Byrne was in straight away and it looked like Fenlons late sub was going to work, Ken Oman put him through one on one with Gary Rogers in goal but the assistant referee had flagged him for offside, very tight call indeed.
After 90 minutes referee Alan Kelly signaled 3 minutes of added time and the Bohs fans believed the 3 points were for them to take but in the 92nd minute Pete Mahons side did it again, they left it late against Fingal last week to take a 1-1 draw and David Mulcahy made sure St Pats were going to remain top of the league to shock Bohemians and leave the final score 1-1. Pat Fenlon will be disgusted after the amount of chances his side created but didnt make anything of. Another dent to Bohs title defense but its still too close to call yet.
