Bohemians returned to league action this evening after their mid season break, with a home game with second in the table Dundalk. Bohs went into the game in fifth place and knew a win would leave them just one off the top of the table to do this though would have been easier said than done considering the form the champions took into this game.
Bohemians were given a bit of a wake up call early on when Fahrudin Kuduzovic found himself with plenty of room in the box, he pulled the ball brilliantly to Neale Fenn and the ex bohs mans shot went wide of Barry Murphy’s goal. On the 10th minute Bohs themselves nearly took an un-likely lead. Mark Quigley had his attempted cross cleared by another familiar face in Dalyer, Matt Gregg.
The rest of the opening half was dead and nothing was happening it was almost as if there wernt any spectators in the ground despite the Jodi Stand being full and half of the Des Kelly stand which was being occupied by Dundalk fans there was certainly nothing to give any of the fans something to cheer about except for the occasional YAY when referee Alan Kelly thought there was a free kick
The only amount of momentum in this game was broken when Ken Oman clashed with Kuduzovic, Oman had to be taken off but he was soon ok to continue after receiving attention on the side of the pitch. So an entire 45 minutes had gone with both keepers not having anything to do neither manager would have been happy heading into the break.
What ever Pat Fenlon said to his gypsies at half time must have worked, Bohs came out a more energised team and within 5 minutes they broke the deadlock sending the Bohs fans into a frenzy. Aaron Greene had collected the ball on the halfway line and put in a very nice pass to Paddy Madden who slotted home from close range, this was his 6th goal in 3 games for Bohs he needed that to make up for some shocking misses in the first half.
Madden would have had extra reason to celebrate a second goal had Garry Breen(No not the former Irish International) not produced a last ditch block when Mark Rossiter had rolled across the area. The county Louth side were very disappointing in putting away their chances when they arrived, they had not even recorded a single shot on goal with little over 10 minutes to go.
Only one change was made on the bohs bench, on 68 minutes Aaron Greene made way for Raffaele Cretaro who was needed to add spark to the forwards line. Dundalk themselves made 2 changes Alan Cawley coming on for Ciaran McGuigan but more notably their second substitution caused a bit of a stirr because only seconds after he was introduced he was shown a straight red card by referee Alan Kelly for a 2 footed challenge on Cretaro. From the free kick which was a good 25 yards out Bohemians got their second goal which was scored by Ruaidhri Higgins from a beautiful free kick, Matt Gregg had no chance in the goal.
Just when you thought an out of form Bohs couldn’t get a third goal they step up and do just that. Right on the stroke of 90 minutes Gareth McGlynn stepped up infront of an open goal and fired home to send Dalymount Park electric. Sporting Fingal is the next game in the league for Bohs next week in Dalymount Park. This was a well deserved victory for the champions which is a message to every other team that they have not surrendered their title.
