The End Of The Rafaloution As Benitez Bolts

CATEGORIES: News | POSTED BY: | June 2, 2010 at 10:23 pm

The Fat Spanish waiter is scrutinising the bill at Anfield tonight as those mad yanks try to get rid of Rafa Benitez. The formerly great club have decided that the spaniard is worth less than a League Two centre half- offering him around €4 million to go back to scoffing paella & leave the coaching to people who actually know what they are doing.
Many would probably concur with the analysis that Benitez gaining a fortuitous Champions’ League crown in his debut season clouded people’s opinions of his technical judgement. the fact that it was made flesh & blood in the curious form of Lucas was a give away for many of us long ago. The American owners have brought a great club to it’s knees & must now hope that the end of the Rafa-loution ushers in a return to what made them the yardstick in their glory years.
Already contact has probably been made with Aston Villa supremo Martin O’Neill, whom many believe covets the Old Trafford hotseat & Roy Hodgson, the creator of the Craven Cottage miracle . Rumours are also rife that Kenny Dalgliesh may even be brought back- these will be interesting days by the Mersey as Liverpool seek to make the right decision.

We've had this conversation now so I feel it fair to comment – the whole reliance on the “fat spanish waiter” slur just seems immature and unnecessary to me. I understand this is an opinion piece but surely you can give your opinion on the man without taking the piss out of his weight or stooping so low as to falling back on simple pointless name-calling.

Benitez has had his good and bad days at Liverpool FC and has made both good and bad decisions there. Frankly, as a (part-time) Liverpool fan myself, (although I'm more of a football fan, and I do remain unbiased), it's as obvious to me as it is to most observers that a huge amount of those decisions were of the bad variety, unfortunately and I recognise that he has been far from their best manager by a long shot.

I want to see the club bought and money pumped into it. I want to see it revitalised, and yes – I want to see Benitez go – but I bear the man no ill will and I wouldn't be one for slagging him personally.

All that said, I have to agree with something Matt Cooper said via twitter this evening:- he asks “without Benitez in place who would fight to keep Stevie G and Torres?”. Cooper suggests that the owners will likely consider selling these two stars to generate up to £100m as – with things as they are – there's a woefully tiny budget (said to be in the region of £15m) for transfers this summer.

He's fearful that Liverpool FC could end up going the way of Leeds United, which would be a disaster for a club with such a strong heritage and history. But it's all about money now for Gillette and Hicks (naturally) so it's a very strong possibility.

Anyway – Why not give us the benefit of your extensive knowledge and throw us some juicy facts that the other sites or TV & radio stations won't have? – a SportSpeak exclusive.. if you can. Letting us know that you believe they've “probably” contacted certain top-drawer managers is about as useful and definitive as saying they've “probably” spoken to Jesus Christ himself.

    Mind you, they probably have…
