Sportspeak’s favourite Toxteth Terror, striker Wayne Rooney should be fit in time for the World Cup after Manchester United revealed he had suffered only “minor” ligament damage.
A club statement said: “We’re pleased to report that Wayne has not suffered a fracture (to his ankle). The scan revealed only minor ligament damage.”
It is not yet known how many games the striker will miss for United.
will probably miss next Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final return leg against Bayern Munich, plus at least four of United’s final six league games.
England’s next international is a friendly against Mexico on 24 May at Wembley and their first World Cup game in South Africa is on 12 June against the USA in Rustenburg.Rooney limped off his flight from Germany on Wednesday with the aid of crutches, before heading straight to a waiting car that whisked him off for an MRI scan.England boss Fabio Capello is understood to have already spoken to Ferguson about Rooney’s condition. The striker, apparently in the form of his life, twisted his right ankle on landing awkwardly after Mario Gomez had trodden on his left foot in the build-up to Bayern’s winner late in the match.Rooney has scored 34 goals for United this season and nine in England’s qualifying campaign for South Africa.
Until his return, the lone striker role at Old Trafford is likely to revert to the Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov, who has netted 12 times for the Red Devils this seasons.Defender Nemanja Vidic said: “Dimitar had a great game against Bolton on Saturday. He is a great footballer. His manager Sir Alex Ferguson will give a detailed update on Rooney’s condition and prognosis on Friday The in-form striker, regarded as key to England’s World Cup chances, injured his ankle in United’s Champions League defeat by Bayern Munich on Tuesday. He is expected to miss Saturday’s vital Premier League clash against Chelsea.
Medical experts have suggested a minor ligament tear would keep him out for between three and four weeks, but with the World Cup starting in mid-June he would be back in training before England fly out to South Africa.
