Sulaiman al-Fahim, the man who acquired Portsmouth from Alexandre Gaydamak at the begining of the season, has resigned as the club’s non-executive chairman and stated that he will give his 10% shareholding to the supporters trust.
Portsmouth have expressed shock at the Fahim’s departure, as they are yet to hear from the him directly.
A club spokesperson said: “We have only heard from Sulaiman through the media and are surprised as only last week he was saying he wanted to buy the club again.”
Pompy are also confused at Fahim’s timing and his stated intention to give his shareholding to the supporters trust as it is understood that the South African consortium interested in buying the club wish to purchase 100% of shares.
Fahim’s concern at the club’s financial management is also causing unrest as there is a view on the south coast that as owner for 43 days, he must bear some responsibility for Portsmouth’s shaky predicament.
The club are due in the high court next Monday, when Revenue and Customs winding-up petition will be heard. Portsmouth’s 112-year history could be ended then.
