Guus Tie In With Liverpool Looking More and More Likely
CATEGORIES: News, Soccer | POSTED BY: Daniel Pitcher | February 13, 2010 at 12:20 pmSportspeak has learned Guus Hiddink confirmed he will leave his post as Russia coach when his contract expires on June 30, 2010.
The 63-year-old Dutchman has been linked with a number of club and national team jobs over the last couple of months. The biggest rumour is that Guus will make a return to the Premier League where he served as Chelsea boss on a temporary basis; to take up the role as Liverpool manager should the reds make a decision to sack their current under pressure manager Rafa Benitez.
Hiddink began his Russia stint in 2006. He reached the semi finals at EURO 2008, but failed to qualify for World Cup 2010.
“After speaking with the new Federal President I have decided that I will no longer be coach of Russia upon expiry of my contract. That is all I want to say for now,” he told De Telegraaf / Telesport.
This news will come as a welcome sigh of relief for Irish fans, who last week learned that if they will want to cheer their team on in the Euro 2012 competition they will have to overcome Russia who with Guus at the helm seemed like a solid force. The Russian Football Federation has said they will not be looking for a new manager to guide them through qualification just yet.
