Danny Grewcock Clearly Stamping On Ulster’s Stephen Ferris

Danny Grewcock, the Bath Rugby lock (No 5), is due to appear before an independent Disciplinary Hearing in Dublin on Thursday, 28 January, 2010, as a result of the red card he received during the Heineken Cup Pool 4 match against Ulster Rugby at The Recreation Ground on Saturday. The red card was issued by referee Jerome Garces of France for a clear stamp on the arm of Ulsters Stephen Ferris which is shown in the report picture.

Bath coach Steve Meehan refused to blame Danny Grewcock’s dismissal for his side’s crushing 28-10 Heineken Cup defeat at home to Ulster, “I wouldn’t say we lost the game because Danny was off the field,” said Meehan. On Grewcock’s red card, Meehan added: “I don’t think he will be very happy with himself for putting himself at risk of getting a card. But his disciplinary record has been very good in recent seasons.” The independent Judicial Officer appointed for the hearing is Jean-Noel Couraud (France). If the judicial officer takes into account that Grewcocks’s discipline has been good then under the rules for stamping, he may be looking at 4 weeks sidelined. One should also take into account that even with his recent good behaviour, John Hayes was given a bigger ban for stamping on Leinster’s Cian Healey earlier in the season.

Stephen Ferris has been in the wars lately in the Heineken Cup. In the last round of games he was gouged twice by two different Stade Francis players, Julien Dupuy who was banned for 23 weeks and David Attoub who was given a massive 70 week ban.
