3D glasses at the ready! Six Nations rugby is going to come bounding out of your screens this Spring with Ireland’s clash with England among two games to be broadcast live in 3D next month.
England team sponsor and telecommunications giant O2 are behind the move which will see England’s February 6th tie against Wales become the first live 3D Sports Broadcast from Europe.
Sportspeak has learned that the 3D experience will be available at 40 Odeon and Cineworld cinemas across the UK on the day.
Rugby supporters will be again able to benefit from 3D viewing three weeks later when Ireland visit Twickenham to take on the hosts.
Top of the range polarised 3D cameras will beam the action directly to the stalls, giving fans the closest experience of the atmosphere inside Twickenham, now in its centenary year.
Live 3D broadcasts are also set to be piped into consumers homes this year, with 3D TV set to be the must have gadget of 2010.
Television broadcaster Sky has rowed in behind the new technology and has announced details of its own 3D service for 2010.
Paul Vaughan, Rugby Football Union operations director, said: “This demonstrates that England Rugby has a rich history and an even richer future with exciting new developments such as O2’s 3D screenings.
“I hope rugby fans will pack cinemas across the country to support the team and mark this milestone.”
O2 UK customers can book priority tickets to the opening match from January 25 by texting 3D to 2020. Tickets go on sale to general public from January 29 with adult tickets from £12.50.
