Alessandro Diamanti scored his third goal in as many games to strenghen West Ham United’s hopes of Premier League survival and keep Portsmouth rooted to the bottom of the table. The Italian struck from the penalty spot at Upton Park halfway through the first half of a match lacking serious quality, clear-cut opportunities or reasons to suggest either team deserve to be higher in the table. Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola will be hoping there will be a repeat of last year’s St Stephen’s Day win over Pompey as his side then went on a decent run in the second half of the season.
