Sportspeak understands that the Scottish FA will offer Craig Levein the vacant Scotland manager’s job, but only if he is happy with the remit. Sportspeak sources on the ground in Glasgow have confirmed that Levein is thought to want to use the job to revitalise Scottish football from the grassroots and youth level up to try & improve their performances in major qualifiers.

Levein said last week that he wanted to manage the national team at some point in his career, but he wasn’t sure when. Speaking at the weekend he said that he was keen to find out more about the role. One concern he has about the job is his fear of becoming bored when the Scotland team is not involved in matches, something that former Scotland boss Walter Smith has warned about.

On his meeting with the SFA, Levein said “The purpose of the meeting in my eyes is to find out a lot more about the job itself and find out what it entails. If it’s just seven games, six games, five games a season, I don’t know what I’m going to do for the rest of the time – if I get offered the job.” Dundee United have reluctantly given the SFA permission to talk to Levein who has the Tannadice outfit challenging for a Europa League place in the SPL.It’s likely that the association would have to fork out around €400,000 to release Levein to replace the luckless George Burley.
