Sporting Fingal won the FAI Ford Cup in dramatic style with a late winner from Gary O’Neill to break Sligo Rovers hearts. After a terrible opening half, the game was stepped up a notch in terms of play and atmosphere when Eoin Doyle finished off a lovely passing move from Rovers by blasting the ball home. The very much majority Sligo fans were buzzing The goal was just reward for Sligo’s second half-play and at that stage there looked to be only one winner. However, Sporting Fingal were handed an unlikely lifeline with five minutes to go when Eamonn Zayed was up-ended in the Rovers box by Sligo goalkeeper Ciaran Kelly. Colm James kept his nerve to smash home an unstoppable effort from the spot. There was more drama to come, when, with seconds to go before extra-time, Robert Bayly whipped in a great cross from the left that Gary O’Neill headed home to win the cup. Its been a great year for Liam Buckley’s charges, first of all being promoted to the Premier Division and now in the place where they knocked Shamrock Rovers out at the quarter final stage they have been crowned FAI Ford Cup Champions.
