Shameful draw for France as Henry Handball cheats Ireland out of World Cup place
CATEGORIES: FIFA World Cup, Match Report, Soccer | POSTED BY: Bob McKenzie | November 18, 2009 at 11:32 pmThe Irish dominated the opening half against a French side which looked uncomfortable right from kick off. Keith Andrews & Glen Whelan dominated the midfield with wingers Damien Duff & Liam Lawrence rampaging down the flanks. Ireland’s top scorer was the man with the magic boot as Robbie Keane netted in the 33rd minute. A slick 1-2 between centurion Kevin Kilbane and Duff with the Fulham star’s cross being driven hard & low into the corner of the net. Duff & Keane should have doubled ireland lead on the hour and then ten minutes later. Duff broke through only for the French keeper to smother his shot away while Keane waltzed through the French defence but waltzed too far as he took the ball round the keeper and ran out of turf. Nicola Anelka went close on 3 occassions as the home side desperately searched for the goal that would break Irish hearts. The French were kept at bay and the tie went into an extra period of 30 minutes.
Anelka hd the first chance to settle it but his rasping shot flashed wide in the opening minutes. When the French finally equalised they did it by cheating. Thierry Henry handled the ball twice & was offside as he played it to Gallas who netted with his head.
