Sporting Fingal have booked their place in the the League of Ireland Premier Division for next season after a 4-2 aggregate victory over Bray Wanderers in their promotion/relegation play-off.
Sporting built on last Friday’s 2-0 win in the first-leg by taking a 1-0 lead at the Carlisle Grounds tonight, thanks to a goal from Eamon Zayed.
Some will say the game was ruined by stupid refereeing decisions from Declan Hanney and some very un-fair yellow cards for those that picked one up.
John Flood’s 83rd minute equaliser sparked a super finale from Bray, who took the lead when goalkeeper Chris O’Connor headed home a corner in injury time.
However, any hope of an unlikely come-back were killed-off just seconds later when O’Connor was caught in possession outside his own penalty area and Robert Bayly was left with a simple finish from close-range as it finished two-all on the night.
This Sporting Fingal project has been totally remarkable, only entering the first division last season and finishing third, this season though has been a major success for Liam Buckleys team, overcoming Shamrock Rovers in the Tallaght Stadium in the Ford cup, getting a place in the Ford Cup final and now of course beating Bray in the playoff. Best of luck to Liam and all his team in Sporting Fingal as they write another major chapter in the book
