CATEGORIES: News | POSTED BY: Bob McKenzie | July 19, 2009 at 7:38 pm36 year old Duluth Georgia golfer Stewart Cink is the latest name to adorn the Claret Jug as he ruined the fairytale finish which would have seen Tom Watson win a record tying sixth Open 26 years after his fifth.
The 59 year old from Kansas had led the field for most of the four days as he bid to become the oldest ever Major winner and tie Harry Vardon’s record of six titles.
In regulation on the final day Lee Westwood, Matt Goggin and Chris Wood all challenged but Cink who was never a leader until Watson failed to make par at the final hole leading to a four hole playoff which saw the veteran’s game finally unravel after four magnificent days which saw Watson roll back the years and roll in the putts to prove his status as the greatest links golfer of all time.
In 1977 Watson had memorably beaten Jack Nicklaus in the famous Duel in the Sun which is now the name of one of the signature holes at Turnberry.
