Roger Federer is now officially the greatest player in the history of the sport of tennis after acheiving a record 15th Grand Slam after winning his sixth Wimbledon title against a stubborn Andy Roddick.
The American was expected to be easy pickings for the Swiss who had already beaten him in two previous Centre Court deciders. Roddick & Federer both served well holding serve until Roddick shocked the five time king of SW19 by breaking him in the twelfth game of the set to edge it 7-5. Roddick was on the verge of a huge upset in the second set when he held four set points at 6-2 in the tiebreak. The favourite won six unanswered points to restore parity. Federer took the third set on another tiebreak but Roddick broke back to take the match to a defining set as he won 6-3. The final set was a marathon with Federer managing to finally acheive his first break of serve in the 30th game of the set as he won 16-14 to acheive immortality.
